Why Not, Google Already Does Everything Else

That is what a lot of people have been saying when asked what they think about a new operating system created by Google. Since the general public has such a positive view of the Google Corporation, most are very open to any new technologies and experiences that they can bring to us. Since we all know Google as the "free" company, it is very easy to be open to their changes and new services as they roll them out, after all if you don't like them you don't have to use them right?

Don't Be Afraid Of Google OS

Some people are very concerned that the new Google OS that is being called Chrome OS or Chromium OS, right now may be the start of a major change in the industry. This may not be just another software release, it may be a glimpse into the future of cloud computing. This "not so new" technology has been in the works for some time now and many companies are already making use of the convenience and power of a cloud computing environment.

So What Is Cloud Computing Anyway?

The concept is simple, you get bunch of computers together that all have hardcore processors and huge drives running a configuration similar to RAID that lets them span your data across multiple servers simultaneously. Now when you data is accessed, 1 or 10 computers may all share the load to deliver your information in a timely manner. This type of setup makes for some serious computing horsepower and also makes all the data on the network redundant so there is never any data loss.

Since there are many computers that make up this localized network infrastructure, the name "cloud" is used. This is not new terminology to the networking world, but the use of the cloud computing in your home is a new concept that Google is betting on. They have already invested millions in their email app, office suite and mapping system that they let us all use for free, now they are ready to tie it all together with a nice front end.

Portable Files, Media, Contacts and More

The big push of the Google Chrome OS is to have complete portability and make it easy for any user to login to the Chrome OS from anywhere and have all of their favorite information at their fingertips. Since all data is stored on the Google cloud, you have your stuff where ever you are. This does take some serious trust and brings up some privacy issues. Some people may not be comfortable storing all of there data on a remote server. However, the ease of use and convenience of this new storage method is pretty powerful too.

If you are already using Google services, you will be glad to know that all of your existing information, documents and other goodies will be seamlessly integrated into the Google OS when you login with your regular Google account.

So What Do You Think Of The Google OS?

It's kind of exciting that google is jumping into OS's, this just might be a very nice alternative to linux for anyone who has issues with microsoft. I have heard that microsoft has been working on introducing cloud computing to the average user as well. The next few years will be interesting, we may all be doing all of our computing on little more than monitors and keyboards.

Very interesting James. I have not heard about Microsoft's efforts, but I am sure that they are keeping a close eye. Since they have been really pushing to make their own OS run better on netbooks and this is really focused on netbooks too, I think there may be a clash of the titans soon.

I first read about microsoft and cloud computing in a wired magazine article but heres a video of Ray Ozzie, microsoft's new chief software architect, explaining the potential of cloud computing.

Several websites that I use regularly do not work well or at all with Google Chrome browser.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chip

Well, I know that there were a few quirks with their own version of the java engine, but I have seen little if any problems with the most recent updates from Chrome. What sites are you running into trouble?

Chrome OS looks awesome!

Hey Nick!

Nice post on Google's upcoming OS mate. I dig how it looks like it will bring the cloud down to Earth for the rest of us, but I'm curious about whatever technology the OS is built on. I know that OS X is built on a BSD core, and Windows is built on so many ideas (not all of them from MS! ;-P)...but what is underpinning Chrome OS? Some sort of Android for the desktop?

I like your hubs.. You are very unique..keep it up..

Hey Highspeed pro, right now there are few different linux distro's being tested, since it is open source you can grab the code they have and play around with it if you are code savvy. Thanks for reading!

liljen23, thanks for your positive comments as well :-)

See you both around,

Nick

    What Is Google Chrome OS

    The Google Chrome Desktop

The desktop on the Google Chrome OS is very simple but since the main point of this system is to get you online, there will not be much interactivity with your desktop environment. You will only be able to add links to web apps and online resources right now. There is no telling if they will continue to develop the user environment further or if they will focus on new features online to fill in the holes, but either way it's pretty cool.
